[edit] Specifications

The VIA EPIA ML-Series Mini-ITX Mainboard is an ultra-compact native x86 platform optimized for today's demanding embedded and productivity applications. At just 17cm x 17cm, the Mini-ITX form factor can fit into very cramped spaces that are not suitable for other motherboard form factors, and is fully compatible with Microsoft® and Linux Operating Systems. Available with an embedded VIA Eden™ ESP processor for fanless systems with ultra low-power requirements, or an embedded VIA C3™ processor for more demanding digital multimedia applications, the VIA EPIA ML-Series is the perfect platform for a whole range of small form factor, low-power and affordable PCs and embedded devices.

The EPIA ML-Series' VIA CLE266 chipset features a hardware-based MPEG-2 accelerator for silky smooth DVD playback, and integrated 2D/3D graphics for a rich multimedia experience. With the sizable memory bandwidth of DDR266 SDRAM and the high data transfer speeds of ATA/133, the EPIA ML-Series ensures the high performance levels required of today's most popular productivity and digital media applications. The user's digital media experience is further enhanced by support for 5.1 surround sound, courtesy of the onboard VIA VT1616 6-Channel AC'97 codec.

High-bandwidth connectivity is supported with up to four USB 2.0 connections provided, as well as 10/100 Ethernet for seamless broadband connectivity. The EPIA ML-Series also has one PCI slot for expandability options and is compatible with a full range of Mini-ITX chassis as well as FlexATX and MicroATX chassis.

[edit] BIOS Update

The BIOS on the motherboard is revision 1.01, but according to the VIA website, the current version is BIOS rev. 1.04 for EPIA ML.

Instructions based on the VIA EPIA TC-Series Mini-ITX Mainboard Tech FAQ:

  1. Make a bootable system through a bootable device set in BIOS, such as a USB FDD, USB HDD, USB ZIP, etc.
  2. Copy the Award BIOS Flash Utility awfl823b.exe (39KB) and the new BIOS file (eg. I0D00102.BIN) onto this bootable storage device.
  3. Boot the computer using this bootable storage device.
  4. At the A:> prompt type AWFL823B I0D00102.BIN
    • This will cause the flash utility to load and automatically use the new file. (For additional parameters type "awfl823/?")
    • Just follow the prompts that you see on the screen.
    • WARNING!! During the final flash process, power should not be disconnected and the process should not be interrupted or the motherboard will not be able to boot up.
  5. When you are through, reboot your computer.
  6. Load the optimized default settings in the BIOS.
