SpaceCraft Assembly and Test Organization

Before you look at some of the S/CAT Structure, read this article from the Grumman Plane News which features S/CAT in the DEC 1969 issue.....

I could not find a complete chronological record of the S/CAT organization over the eight or nine years of its existence. The very dynamic nature of the Apollo (LM) program was such that it demanded - many assignment changes, the use of Job Shoppers from other companies (IE. ARMA, IBM etc.), rotating personnel on temporary duty, and frequent internal reorganizations.

The only "organization" material that I have come up with are these "small snap shots" of the rosters of S/CAT people that were contained in some of my old records.

  • Crew Systems, Inspectors, Technicians, ACE Personnel, Systems Reduction, Carry-On Support, NASA personnel, and many more ...

The Test Teams were fairly large organizations. This is a list of the people who helped run the LTA-8 Plugs-in OCP 61017 and were given an additional paid vacation day as recognition for a "Job Well Done".

The Head Test Conductor was James J. McCue Jr. The memo was  from Tom Kelly and was signed by Lew Evans - dated 17 Feb. 1967.

Support

The LM program at Grumman was a large and complex effort. At it's peak, over 9,000 people were employed by Grumman. There was a continent of 1,400 at KSC launching facility, 450 working at the Houston space headquarters, and 300 at the rocket test facility at White Sands, New Mexico. Of the 7,000 workers at Bethpage, there were 2,400 engineers assigned to the program: 1,800 on the flight vehicle and 600 on the ground support equipment.

On the other hand, organizing the LM effort was a massive job involving communication with NASA, and the other major Apollo contractors. Grumman's subcontractors who produced systems or parts for the LM were over 140 in number, and each of these subcontractors used subcontractors etc..... Here is a list of some of the major Grumman subcontractors:
