About (not the) Apollo 17 Flight Journal
[edit] (not the) Apollo 17 Flight Journal Wiki
This is a work in progress. Please comment using the "discussion" link at the bottom of each page.
When I started doing research for Apollo 17: The Blue Marble, I keenly felt the lack of an Apollo 17 version of the Apollo Flight Journal. Since Apollo 17 has always been my favorite moon mission, I decided to contribute towards that end.
This is NOT the official Apollo 17 Flight Journal[1]. Once I'm satisfied the material here is documented and reasonably complete, I'll submit it to NASA for review, and, I hope, as my contribution for when they create the real Apollo 17 Flight Journal. The NASA History Division publishes the only official Apollo Flight Journal; I owe a huge debt to David Woods and Frank O'Brien for the Apollo Flight Journal and to Eric Jones and his superb Apollo Lunar Surface Journal.

[edit] Status
As of April 11, 2007, this project covers the period from launch to the end of day one.
I've combined the OCR'd text in the transcript PDFs and added some information from the Technical Crew Debriefing and Jack Schmitt's JSC oral history interview. I still don't have the original audio recordings, so the transcripts should not be considered definitive. I've also included some articles from the existing Apollo Flight Journals and started adding my own. I've also been collecting and organizing NASA publicity photos (see launch preparation and flight), and adding photos to the journal pages. Finally, I've upgraded this web site to make a solid working platform.
[edit] Things to do:
- Verify transcripts against audio, where available (distinguish between onboard and radio).
- Establish detailed timeline: unlike the other Apollo flights, the transcripts for Apollo 17 do not have a timestamp for each quotation.
- Proofread and correct content, especially technical terms and acronyms
- Add links and inline explanatory content from the AFJ and ALSJ (see: Apollo Flight Journal notes)
[edit] AfjWiki: A MediaWiki Wiki
A proper reference needs sources identified, interpretations explained, and a revision history with audit trail. In this case, it also needs to be web-friendly, and it helps if it's really convenient and easy to edit. After I compiled the raw data, I realized I already have a web application that does all that - MediaWiki, the underlying engine for Wikipedia and Wikibooks. The result is what you see here.
This wiki runs on the open-source MediaWiki engine used by Wikipedia. As always, I try to build on the work of others wherever possible.
Philosophy
- There should be exactly one source for each bit of content
- Sources must be meticulously tracked and audited
- Work should create content, not tools to support the content
- Always separate formatting from content
