Hi Vince. I've copied the entire list of my CD's below. These are just the audio - I'm in the process of copying all the video stuff to DVD (I'm doing some this evening). Some of the audio bits are obviously not to do with space, and some haven't yet been catalogued, but it'll let you know in one go what I've got. I think I have the material you mention, but I'm sure you'll have something to interest me. Where are you, and which networks did you tape the Apollo flights from?

Cheers, Colin.

Apollo Launches Radio Coverage

Fred Becker, Aug 27, 2001

I am from CA, not FL, so need your help with this question. In 1972 I was at the launch of Apollo 16. I saw the launch from Titusville and took photos and brought my tape recorder. I placed my microphone on the hood of someone's car next to their portable radio which was tuned in to a local Titusville station. The commentator was quite an expert on Saturn, but was not part of NASA, as NASA launch control commentary would interrupt his narration periodically. He called the launch from the Press Site. I am hoping someone on this list may know more about what radio station this was and who the commentator was. I would like to see if this station or the commentator has preserved copies of his broadcasts. He was often referring to Apollo 11 and looking forward to Apollo 17, during the countdown, so I presume he covered multiple launches. I would like to get a sound board copy of this broadcast on tape or CD-Rs. In fact I'd like to get copies of all the launches as covered by this commentator.

I am interested in this because he called the launch with great excitement. Also, if anyone on this list (in the US) would like a copy of my recording on CD-R, send me $3 to cover costs and I'll make them a copy. Maybe if someone hears the CD-R, they may also remember this.

More about my Apollo 16 launch visit:

I was on the last public bus tour out to the launch pad on the evening before the launch. We were let out SE of the pad and fairly close where we could observe for about a half an hour. Then as the bus went North around the pad, I was able to photograph the tower and then the rocket as they silhouetted the setting sun. I also photographed a really great view of the pad from our closest distance NE of the pad. Then the bus took us to the North wall of the VAB where we were let out and allowed to look inside the VAB and again back out to Pad 39A. It was a beautiful site by then as the searchlights began to illuminate the vehicle. I also got to see Apollo 17 rising high inside the VAB.

Then the bus took us back to the Visitors Center. As soon as we arrived there we were told that the base was closed and everyone must leave, but I was without transportation. I had gone there by bus with a high school friend. So we just went out on the Causeway and started walking off base. This misfortune turned out to be a great bit of luck, however. For directly ahead of us in the now darkening sky was the most huge crescent Earthlit Moon set very close if not right inside constellation Orion. Not only that, but the searchlights from the Saturn behind us could be seen reaching into the sky to the North. It was as if these beams of light were reaching out towards the Moon. I realized that very few people were getting this particular spectacular view just then, and I felt really lucky. Orion was also the name for the Lunar Module on Apollo 16. This has remained the most vivid memory of my first visit to KSC.

...Finally after about a half an hour of walking, a security car stopped and picked us up and escorted us to the gate across the Indian River. We stayed up all night watching the vehicle and listening on the radio. The next day the launch went off without a hitch. I've since managed to see five Shuttle launches. I have a pretty good record with launches. Every time I've gone to see one, it has launched on time.

So anyway, does anybody know about the local radio stations doing Saturn launch coverage?

Fred

Re: Apollo Launches Radio Coverage

Mike Smithwick, May 11, 2002

Hi Fred, great story! I had the good fortune of seeing Apollo 11, 15 and 17 launch. I did the same thing with a tape recorder for Apollo 17, and recorded a similar station and have recently converted all of my files to mp3 including that one. Unfortunately, on the bus back to our hotel in Orlando, I rewound the tape to the ignition to count the number of seconds it took for the sound to hit us. I stopped the tape exactly at where the sound started, and then started recording some more stuff right at that point, so overwrote the actual launch audio. Damned kid.

Interestingly enough, the commentators felt compelled to do their own countdown, talking over the PAO from about T-15 seconds. But they did so with a great panache and exhilaration. Sure made up for the blase' attitude of the network boys.

What was fun was that the station would broadcast all of the air-to-ground Comm after launch, and during LOS, just broadcast music.

The station we listened to was WCKS, which I had thought was in Orlando, but according to their web site is in Georgia. I only caught the name of one of the commentators, and it sounded like that of the great author, Martin Caidin. Which makes sense since he lived down there and did a lot of aviation and space articles.
